LOZEN...An extraordinary woman, ahead of her time, beyond her culture...Sister of a mighty Apache Chief...A warrior, dreamer, visionary and healer from long ago...A Woman for All Seasons....
In naming her exclusive clothing and jewelry line, it is no surprise that LINDA AMELIA, an American Indian woman, chose to honor LOZEN, the Chiricahua Apache woman who has been her personal inspiration.
When she began creating her unique line of clothing, Linda was immediately drawn to the historic and contemporary American Indian inspired designs of the Pendleton Woolen Mills. The fabrics were lightweight and durable, the colors were brilliant and deep and the designs were connected to Linda’s Tribal and cultural heritage.
The custom designed clothing that is available through Reflections of Lozen relies on the unique fabrics produced by the Pendleton Woolen Mills. The original mill began as a plant that prepared raw wool to be shipped out to become fabric. It was built in 1893; in 1895 the mill was enlarged and converted into a textile mill and in 1896 began making Indian blankets—geometric patterned robes and shawls for the Indian men and women in the area—the Umatilla, Walla Walla and Cayuse Tribes. That original business was purchased by the Bishop family around 1909. The family built a new facility, with the assistance of the town of Pendleton, and resumed the production of Indian blankets. They introduced new designs, colors and patterns to their product line. The company expanded their trade from the local Indians to the Navajo, Hopi and Zuni peoples of the American Southwest. Tribal people often brought designs to the mills which consisted of patterns that had either cultural or ceremonial meaning. In a very short time, Pendleton blankets and robes became the centerpiece of traditional honoring ceremonies; this is as true today as it was in 1915.
New designs are continually being developed by Pendleton and are often produced only once, which adds to the uniqueness of Linda’s coats, jackets and vests. The perfect accessories to her clothing creations are the stunning jewelry pieces Linda creates from semi-precious gem stones and faceted crystals.
